Ceramics: Introduction to Handbuilding

Instructed by Michael Saul

Program Details

Audience: Beginner to Intermediate / Teen to Adult

Students will explore a variety of handbuilding techniques and make an array of ceramic forms both functional and sculptural in the class taught by Michael Saul. This course will give students a strong foundation through traditional forming skills such as pinch, coil, slab and extruding to decoration. Using these forms we will then explore many slip and texture techniques such as slip trailing, inlay, scraffitto, mishima, sprgging, stamping and colored clays to make a dynamic and interesting surface to glaze. The work made in this class will be fired in an oxidation or wood fired kiln. This class will be a creative experience for beginners and more advanced students. Experienced students may submit a written proposal of independent study in handbuilding suited to their interests. This class is open to artists of all skill levels. Tuition covers glaze materials and kiln firing; however, students should anticipate additional fees for clay and some tools.
