Roberta Buckles

Roberta is an MFA graduate from UTSA with an emphasis in painting.  Her oil paintings are large, colorful and spirited, focusing on color, light and reflection, riding the border between realism and abstraction.  Her interest in the abstract nature of perception and her never-ending fascination with reflection and distortion led her to this focus. You can see some of Roberta's work on her website and here.

Roberta teaches a variety of art related courses in and around San Antonio.  In the past, she also conducted workshops in colored pencil and water-soluble pencil techniques for the nationally advertised Art Method and Material Show in Pasadena, California, which was sponsored and promoted by American Artist Magazine.  She was showcased with selected artists in the March 2005 issue of Artist's Magazine in the article "Making a Leap".  She has participated in numerous exhibitions in San Antonio as well as nationally.

Previous to her formal art education, Roberta served from 2001-2003 on the national governing board of the Colored Pencil Society of America.  This organization holds international exhibitions every year and has over 24 District Chapters nationwide.  Her love of drawing led her to this organization and much of her earlier work is in this medium.

In her past corporate life, Roberta was a national advertising sales manager for The New York Times and later was a national group advertising sales manager for the American Baby Group of Premedia, Inc.  Like so many others, although she had considered an art career as a young student, she put it aside for a more "practical" eduation and career.  However, her desire for and love of the arts never diminished.  When she and her husband moved to Orange County, CA in 2000, she made the major life decision to leave the corporate world and pursue her life's dream of getting a formal art education and focusing her career in the arts.
